BATTLE OF JONESBORO, GEORGIA
August 31-September 1, 1864
This may have been the battle that shaped the outcome of the War Between the States. In his "march to the sea," Union General Sherman had tried unsuccessfully to disrupt railroad shipments of supplies to Confederate troops in the Atlanta area. In late August of 1864, Sherman launched a major move against Confederate Generl Hood's troops guarding the Macon & Western railroad near Jonesboro. Sherman knew that the loss of the railroad and the supplies it carried would cause Confederate troops to evacuate Atlanta. The South was not prepared for this strong offensive, and just as General Sherman had expected, Confederate troops withdrew from Atlanta and the city was taken by the North.
