The CAS Hanwei Practical Katana brings functional Japanese sword design within reach of practitioners who want a capable, durable katana without the demanding maintenance associated with traditionally made swords. Built for tameshigiri and other cutting sword arts, it combines a rugged 1566 high-carbon steel blade with durable synthetic handle components.
The 27" blade is forged from 1566 steel and differentially tempered to approximately 60 HRC at the edge and 40 HRC along the back. This traditional heat-treatment approach gives the blade a hard cutting edge while retaining a more resilient spine. The blade is fully functional and designed for practical training and cutting applications.
The 11" handle uses synthetic components that won't shrink or swell with perspiration or changes in humidity like natural materials can. The updated design also features a removable tsuka, making maintenance and access to the handle assembly more convenient. Refined tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki furniture give this practical sword a crisp, clean appearance.
Measuring approximately 39 1/2" overall and weighing 2 pounds, 4 ounces, the Practical Katana offers substantial presence while maintaining the proportions expected of a traditional katana. The included saya provides a practical way to carry and protect the sword when it's not in use.
With decades of sword-making experience behind the Hanwei name, the Practical Katana has established itself as a dependable choice for practitioners and collectors alike. Its combination of functional construction, modern materials, and traditional geometry makes it a practical way to experience the discipline of Japanese sword arts.
