The CAS Hanwei Practical Plus Katana combines traditional Japanese sword styling with practical construction and dependable cutting performance. Built as an accessible, functional katana, it features a forged 1566 high-carbon steel blade, traditional fittings, and a genuine rayskin-wrapped handle that gives it an authentic feel.
The 27" blade is forged from 1566 high-carbon steel and differentially tempered to approximately 60 HRC at the edge and 40 HRC along the back. This heat treatment produces a hard, capable cutting edge while maintaining a more resilient spine. The blade's traditional geometry and visible hamon add visual character while reflecting the sword's performance-oriented design.
The 11 1/4" handle features genuine rayskin beneath a specially developed tsuka-ito wrap, providing a secure grip and traditional appearance. A traditional-length tang is double-pegged and allows the handle to be removed for cleaning and maintenance. Japanese Dogwood fittings, dragon menuki, an iron sunburst-style tsuba, and a brass habaki complete the classic presentation.
Measuring 39 1/2" overall and weighing approximately 2 pounds, 4 ounces, the Practical Plus has substantial presence while maintaining balanced proportions. Its 5" point of balance contributes to controlled handling for practitioners and makes the sword equally appealing to collectors who appreciate functional construction.
With its forged high-carbon steel blade, genuine rayskin handle construction, and distinctive traditional fittings, the Practical Plus Katana offers a rugged and authentic take on a practical Japanese sword.
