The Velvicut® 4 lb. Premium American Felling Axe with Sheath is a full-sized tool forged for serious woodsmen and built to last for generations. Each 4 lb. axe head is forged from 5160 grade alloy steel, known for its strength, toughness, and edge retention. Once forged, the head is precision-ground in a robotic cell before being hand-sharpened by a seasoned craftsman using progressively finer abrasives and finished with a leather strop. The result is a razor-sharp edge that bites deep and clean. A sharp axe is a safe axe, and this tool arrives honed and ready for real work. Heat treated and quenched to produce a hardened bit extending 1.5 inches from the edge, the head is tempered to Rc 52–56 to maintain sharpness without becoming brittle. “Council” is proudly stamped on one side and “USA” on the other, a mark of authentic American craftsmanship.

The 36-inch handle is crafted from Grade A American hickory, selected specifically for straight grain orientation and optimal density. Its traditional curved pattern offers both balance and ergonomic efficiency, making it well suited for long hours of use in the field. The handle is seated in a traditional manner with a hardwood wedge and round steel wedge for added durability and head retention. It’s finished with linseed oil to bring out the hickory’s natural grain while protecting it from the elements.
