Hornady MonoFlex ML .50 Caliber Low Drag Sabot ammunition is a muzzleloader projectile system consisting of a .452-inch-diameter MonoFlex bullet housed in a low-drag sabot. Designed for compatible .50-caliber inline muzzleloaders, this 20-count package uses a 250-grain monolithic copper-alloy projectile with Hornady’s Flex Tip technology.
The MonoFlex bullet is constructed from a copper alloy rather than traditional lead-based materials. Hornady states that the monolithic construction is designed to maintain projectile integrity during impact, with the bullet retaining approximately 95% of its original weight. The Flex Tip is incorporated into the nose of the projectile and is intended to promote controlled expansion across a range of impact velocities, including lower velocities associated with longer-range impacts.
The .452-inch projectile is paired with a Low Drag Sabot engineered for use in .50-caliber muzzleloading systems. The sabot provides the interface between the projectile and the bore, allowing the smaller-diameter MonoFlex bullet to be used in a compatible .50-caliber muzzleloader. Hornady lists the MonoFlex ML for medium game weighing approximately 50 to 300 pounds. The projectile has a listed sectional density of .175 and a ballistic coefficient of .210 (G1). The product is supplied as 20 individual 250-grain projectile-and-sabot combinations under item number 67274.
Published ballistic data was developed using a stock Thompson/Center Omega inline muzzleloader with a 150-grain powder charge. Hornady lists a muzzle velocity of 2,250 feet per second and muzzle energy of 2,735 foot-pounds. At 50 yards, velocity is listed at 2,031 feet per second with 2,290 foot-pounds of energy and a trajectory of 1.8 inches. At 100 yards, the listed velocity is 1,852 feet per second with 1,904 foot-pounds of energy and a trajectory of 3 inches.
At 150 yards, velocity is listed at 1,574 feet per second with 1,684 foot-pounds of energy and a trajectory of 1.7 inches. At 200 yards, the published velocity is 1,529 feet per second with 1,297 foot-pounds of energy and a trajectory of -2.7 inches. At 250 yards, velocity is listed at 1,389 feet per second with 1,070 foot-pounds of energy and a trajectory of -11 inches.
