Blade Steel: AUS-10A
Published: April 27th, 2026
AUS-10A is a Japanese stainless steel developed by Aichi Steel, part of a broader family that includes AUS-6 and AUS-8. It was engineered to improve on earlier compositions by increasing carbon and optimizing alloying elements to create a more capable, well-rounded blade steel. In practice, AUS-10A occupies a middle ground between traditional stainless steels like 440C and more modern, higher-alloy powder steels, offering a balance that has made it increasingly common in production knives over the past decade.
At its core, AUS-10A is defined by a carefully balanced composition. With carbon between roughly 0.95 and 1.10 percent, it is firmly in the high-carbon stainless category. That carbon content is the primary driver of hardness and edge retention, allowing the steel to take and hold a fine edge without becoming excessively brittle. Chromium, present in the 13 to 14.5 percent range, provides the stainless foundation, forming chromium carbides and protecting the steel from corrosion in humid or acidic environments.
The supporting elements refine that foundation rather than redefine it. Molybdenum, typically around 0.1 to 0.3 percent, improves hardenability and contributes to strength under stress, particularly at higher temperatures. Vanadium, though present in relatively small amounts, plays a disproportionate role by refining grain structure and forming hard carbides that improve wear resistance and edge stability. Nickel, at roughly half a percent, enhances toughness and corrosion resistance, while manganese and silicon contribute to overall strength and structural integrity during heat treatment.
Composition
Carbon - 0.95-1.10%
Chromium - 13-14.5%
Molybdenum - 0.1-0.3%
Vanadium - 0.1-0.25%
Nickel - 0.49%
Manganese - 0.5%
Silicon - 1%
Together, these elements produce a good all-around steel. Properly heat-treated, AUS-10A typically falls in the range of about 58 to 60 HRC. At this hardness, the steel maintains a stable, fine edge while retaining enough toughness to resist chipping in normal use. Rather than chasing maximum edge retention at the cost of brittleness, AUS-10A aims for reliability over time, especially in real-world conditions where impact, lateral stress, and inconsistent maintenance are factors.
Edge retention in AUS-10A is driven by its carbon content and vanadium carbides, which resist wear during cutting. While it does not compete with high-vanadium powder-metallurgy steels in raw wear resistance, it holds an edge significantly longer than lower-carbon stainless steels and does so with less difficulty in sharpening. That ease of sharpening is one of the defining practical characteristics of the alloy. The relatively fine carbide structure allows the edge to be restored quickly with conventional stones, making it more forgiving for people who maintain their own knives.
In the broader landscape of knife steels, AUS-10A is often compared to VG-10, another Japanese stainless alloy. Both share similar carbon levels and general performance goals, but AUS-10A tends to lean towards toughness and ease of sharpening, while VG-10 is often tuned for slightly higher wear resistance and edge retention. AUS-10A was developed as a practical steel, and not a specialized one. In a field increasingly defined by highly alloyed, specialized materials, AUS-10A remains a straightforward, well-engineered stainless steel that delivers consistent results across a wide range of applications without demanding equally specialized maintenance or handling.
