Böhler K340 ISODUR is a steel some knife users know for its combination of toughness, edge retention, and chipping resistance, but knives were not the reason it was created. K340 was developed as an industrial cold-work tool steel for demanding applications where wear resistance alone was insufficient. The steel had to remain hard and stable while also tolerating repeated mechanical stress without cracking or failing prematurely

The Development of K340

K340 ISODUR belongs to a group of tool steels containing approximately eight percent chromium. Böhler developed it for applications where conventional 12-percent-chromium cold work steels, including grades such as 1.2379, did not provide the desired toughness or resistance to adhesive wear. Those traditional high-chromium steels had already proven effective because of their hardness and abrasion resistance, but demanding industrial tooling required a broader balance of properties. A steel that resisted wear but chipped, cracked, or suffered surface damage under pressure could still shorten tool life considerably.

The distinction between abrasive and adhesive wear was especially important to K340's development. Abrasive wear occurs as hard particles or rough materials gradually remove material from a surface. Adhesive wear develops when two surfaces under pressure begin to stick together at a microscopic level, allowing material to transfer or tear away as they move against one another. Böhler designed K340 to handle both forms of wear while also maintaining the toughness and compressive strength needed for heavily loaded tooling.

Composition and Design

K340 contains approximately 1.10 percent carbon, 8.30 percent chromium, 2.10 percent molybdenum, 0.90 percent silicon, 0.50 percent vanadium, and 0.40 percent manganese, along with trace additions of aluminum and niobium. Carbon allows the steel to harden and supports the formation of wear-resistant carbides. Chromium contributes to hardenability and carbide formation, while molybdenum adds strength and wear resistance. Vanadium introduces hard vanadium carbides and helps restrain grain growth during heat treatment.

Its chromium content is notably lower than that of traditional D2-type cold work steels. Higher chromium levels can produce a greater volume of chromium-rich carbides, improving abrasive wear resistance but potentially reducing toughness when carbide size or volume becomes excessive. K340 uses a lower chromium level and a different alloy balance to maintain strong wear resistance while improving toughness. The addition of aluminum has also played a role, helping promote oxide passivation at the surface and reducing the tendency of material to adhere to tooling under pressure.

Electroslag Remelting

Unlike Böhler steels such as K390 MICROCLEAN, K340 is not produced through powder metallurgy. It begins as an air-melted steel and is then processed through electroslag remelting, commonly abbreviated ESR. During ESR, a previously produced steel electrode is remelted through a heated slag layer and allowed to solidify again under controlled conditions. The process reduces segregation, where alloying elements become unevenly concentrated during solidification, while also improving cleanliness and uniformity throughout the material.

Böhler describes K340 ISODUR as having very low levels of micro- and macro-segregation. In industrial tooling, that helps reduce the likelihood that large inclusions or uneven alloy distribution will contribute to premature failure. For knife production, greater uniformity can also make the steel more predictable during heat treatment, grinding, sharpening, and use. ISODUR should not be confused with Böhler's MICROCLEAN powder-metallurgy process, which atomizes molten steel into small particles before consolidating them under heat and pressure. That method allows highly alloyed steels to be produced with fine, evenly distributed carbides, while K340's less extreme composition allows ESR to improve cleanliness and homogeneity without using powder metallurgy.

Adoption in Knives

For many years, K340 remained primarily an industrial steel, and its adoption by knifemakers appears to have happened gradually. As specialty tool steels became more accessible to custom makers and production manufacturers, K340 offered another option for users who wanted substantial wear resistance without moving toward the very high carbide volumes found in more extreme steels. Its combination of toughness and wear resistance gave makers an alternative to both simpler tool steels and more highly alloyed powder-metallurgy grades.

Australian manufacturer Halfbreed Blades is one company that has regularly used K340 in modern fixed blades. Models such as the MCK-02 Medium Clearance Knife and MIK-03 Gen-2 Medium Infantry Knife use Austrian-made K340 ISODUR in thick, full-tang blades intended for demanding field use. Halfbreed heat treats the steel to 59-60 HRC, a relatively conservative range suited to the durability expected from larger working knives. The MCK-02 uses a 6.5 mm-thick K340 blade in a design developed for active-duty personnel and strenuous outdoor use, while the MIK-03 Gen-2 uses the same blade thickness in a military-oriented fixed blade.

That use in heavy fixed blades closely matches the kind of work K340 was originally designed to handle. The steel was developed for tools that needed to remain hard under repeated loading without becoming overly prone to cracking or surface damage. In knives, it has found a smaller niche in hard-use fixed blades where toughness and wear resistance are valued more than maximum edge retention.


What to Buy

The Halfbreed Blades LFK-07 Gen 2, developed by Hardcore Hardware Australia, is a compact fixed blade designed for quick access and controlled use when a larger knife may be cumbersome. Its 2.75" modified drop-point blade is made from 0.23-inch Böhler K340 Austrian tool steel, hardened to 59–60 HRC, and features a plain edge with a black Teflon coating for added corrosion resistance and reduced glare. Spine jimping provides additional thumb traction, while the full-tang construction extends through the ergonomically contoured black G-10 handle, secured with steel Torx screws. An integrated glass-break pommel adds another practical function at the rear. Measuring 6.69" overall and weighing 6.07 ounces, the LFK-07 Gen 2 comes with an ambidextrous Kydex sheath featuring friction retention and DOTS USA belt-mounting hardware for attachment to compatible gear.

The Halfbreed Large Bush Knife Gen 2 is a substantial field knife built around full-tang construction and heavy-duty Austrian K340 ISODUR tool steel. Its 5.7" modified drop-point blade is made from 0.25-inch stock, hardened to 59–60 HRC, and protected by a Dark Earth Teflon coating, while a polished plain edge and broad fuller support demanding cutting tasks. An oversized finger choil, pronounced guard, and jimping at key contact points provide additional control. The black G-10 handle scales are ergonomically contoured, secured with steel Torx fittings, and feature ambidextrous Teflon-coated steel bow drill divots. Measuring 11.22" overall and weighing 17.46 ounces, the knife also features a crusher pommel with an integrated ferro rod striker. It comes with a US-made molded Kydex sheath offering belt and PALS/MOLLE mounting options and an integrated ferro rod carrier.
