Blade Steel: Böhler M398

Böhler M398 is one of the newest and most advanced stainless powder metallurgy steels available to knife makers today, but its origins can be traced back through decades of metallurgical innovation rather than a single breakthrough. The alloy is the product of Böhler’s long-standing effort to push the limits of wear-resistant stainless tool steels, a pursuit that began well before M398 itself existed. Founded in Vienna, Austria, in 1870, Böhler established a reputation for producing premium specialty steels for some of the world's most demanding industries. Over the following century, the company became known not only for its high-quality alloys, but also for continually refining steelmaking processes to solve increasingly difficult engineering problems. By the late twentieth century, Böhler had become one of the pioneers of powder metallurgy, allowing its engineers to produce steels with alloy compositions that conventional ingot casting simply could not achieve.

One of the greatest successes to emerge from that work was M390 MICROCLEAN. Introduced during the late 1980s, M390 quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest stainless tool steels ever developed. It combined excellent corrosion resistance, impressive toughness, high hardness, and exceptional wear resistance into a remarkably balanced package. Industrial manufacturers embraced it for injection molding tools, medical equipment, food-processing machinery, and precision cutting applications, while knife makers soon recognized that those same qualities translated into outstanding cutting performance. By the early 2000s, M390 had become one of the defining "super steels" on the premium knife market, appearing on production and custom knives from manufacturers around the world.
As successful as M390 proved to be, industrial applications continued evolving. Modern manufacturing increasingly relied on abrasive composite materials, glass-filled polymers, and advanced plastics that accelerated tool wear far beyond what earlier alloys had been designed to handle. Rather than replacing M390, Böhler's metallurgists set out to create a specialized version of the steel that prioritized dramatically longer service life under these demanding conditions. The result was M398 MICROCLEAN, an alloy that retained M390's excellent corrosion resistance while pushing wear resistance to an entirely new level.
The changes Böhler made were deliberate rather than dramatic. Carbon content increased from 1.9 percent in M390 to 2.7 percent, while vanadium rose from roughly 4 percent to an impressive 7.2 percent. Chromium remained at 20 percent to preserve the alloy's stainless characteristics, while molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, and silicon rounded out the composition. Together, these adjustments created an alloy capable of forming a substantially greater volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides, giving M398 significantly greater resistance to abrasive wear than its predecessor.
Like every member of the MICROCLEAN family, M398 is produced using powder metallurgy. Instead of allowing molten steel to solidify into large ingots, the steel is atomized into microscopic powder particles that cool almost instantly before being consolidated into fully dense billets under tremendous heat and pressure. This manufacturing process creates an exceptionally fine and uniform carbide distribution throughout the steel, eliminating many of the segregation issues associated with conventional steelmaking. The result is an alloy capable of achieving levels of wear resistance and consistency that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to produce using traditional methods.

It did not take long for the knife community to recognize the alloy's potential. As information about M398 began circulating around 2019, enthusiasts quickly noticed its unusually high vanadium content and immediately began comparing it to established high-performance steels such as CPM S90V, CPM S110V, Maxamet, K390, and Böhler's own M390. Custom makers were among the first to experiment with the alloy, intrigued by the possibility of combining true stainless corrosion resistance with edge retention approaching the highest levels available in modern cutlery steels. Early testing by metallurgists and experienced users largely confirmed those expectations, with M398 demonstrating extraordinary resistance to abrasive wear while maintaining the corrosion resistance expected from a premium stainless steel.
That performance comes with predictable tradeoffs, though. Increasing the volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides inevitably reduces toughness compared to more balanced alloys like M390 or MagnaCut. M398 excels when used for slicing and prolonged cutting through abrasive materials such as cardboard, rope, fiber-reinforced materials, and dense packaging, where its ability to resist wear allows it to remain sharp long after many other stainless steels begin to lose their edge. At the same time, it is less forgiving under heavy impacts or lateral stress than steels designed with greater toughness in mind. Like nearly every premium powder metallurgy steel, its ultimate performance also depends heavily on proper heat treatment, with manufacturers commonly targeting hardness values in the low-to-mid 60 HRC range to fully realize the alloy's potential.
The same vanadium carbides responsible for its remarkable edge retention make the steel noticeably more difficult to sharpen than more conventional stainless alloys. Diamond or high-quality ceramic abrasives are generally preferred, as traditional aluminum oxide stones require considerably more time to remove material. For many people, however, the reduced sharpening frequency more than compensates for the additional effort required when maintenance eventually becomes necessary.
As manufacturers became more familiar with processing the alloy, M398 gradually expanded beyond the custom knife market into premium production models. Companies including Spyderco, LionSteel, Fox Knives, Vosteed, Bestech, Poikilo, and several boutique makers have incorporated M398 into limited-production and flagship models, typically positioning it as a premium option for enthusiasts seeking maximum edge retention. While it remains considerably less common than other steels, its growing availability showcases the increasing confidence in the alloy's performance and the industry's ability to machine and heat treat such a highly alloyed steel.
More than a century after Böhler began producing specialty steels in Austria, M398 stands as the latest chapter in the company's long history of metallurgical innovation. It demonstrates how advances in powder metallurgy continue to expand what is possible in blade steel design, pushing performance into territory that would have seemed unattainable only a few decades ago. Whether it remains a niche alloy or becomes more widely adopted, M398 has already secured its place among the most technically advanced stainless steels ever developed for cutting tools.
