Among modern blade materials, few have cultivated the mystique and loyal following of INFI. Unlike mainstream knife steels, which can be traced directly to industrial tool steel catalogs or mass-market powder metallurgy manufacturers, INFI exists exclusively within the realm of the Busse Combat and its founder, Jerry Busse. For decades, it has sparked intense debate among enthusiasts, metallurgists, and collectors trying to decipher the secret to its legendary performance. While community research and independent analysis have gradually shed light on its chemical composition, the complete heat-treatment protocol remains a closely guarded secret, cementing INFI as one of the most enigmatic materials in the knife industry.
The story began in the late 1970s when Jerry Busse started making knives, eventually establishing Busse Combat in the early 1980s with a focus on producing hard-use tools capable of surviving extreme abuse. During an era when the industry was leaning heavily toward stainless steels and maximum edge retention, Busse took the opposite path. He sought a material that prioritized absolute toughness, shock resistance, and real-world durability without completely sacrificing corrosion resistance or cutting power. This pursuit ultimately birthed INFI.
From the beginning, Busse emphasized that the alloy's composition alone could not account for its behavior. The company has maintained that INFI is as much a heat-treatment protocol as it is a raw material, relying on a specialized process that reportedly includes multiple tempering stages and cryogenic treatment. Busse argues that this precise combination produces a refined microstructure and unique physical characteristics that cannot be replicated simply by copying the composition.
When independent testing finally revealed that composition, it exposed that it differed significantly from mainstream expectations. The current generation of INFI is generally believed to contain roughly 0.64% carbon, 8.12% chromium, 0.85% molybdenum, 0.33% vanadium, and 0.63% silicon. Earlier iterations are believed to have included nitrogen, cobalt, and small amounts of nickel. This shift led enthusiasts to differentiate between "old INFI" and "new INFI," with independent analyses suggesting that these modifications occurred sometime in the early 2000s, though the company has never publicly detailed the reasons behind the change.

At just over 8%, it falls short of the 12% threshold required to be labeled a true stainless steel, yet it offers significantly better stain resistance than traditional carbon and tool steels. Molybdenum steps in to add hardenability and structural strength, vanadium refines the grain structure to boost wear resistance without creating large carbide clusters, and silicon provides essential elasticity within the steel matrix.
Ultimately, though, it was real-world abuse rather than a spec sheet that made INFI famous. Busse knives earned their reputation through jaw-dropping demonstrations, effortlessly chopping through steel drums, prying apart heavy materials, and absorbing massive impacts without chipping or fracturing. Though typically hardened to a relatively modest 58 to 60 HRC, INFI proved that hardness is not the sole metric of a great blade. By trading away excessive hardness for a shock-absorbing, resilient edge, the steel carved out a distinct niche just as the rest of the market was chasing brittle, wear-resistant powder metallurgy steels. For military personnel, survivalists, and outdoor enthusiasts, this tradeoff offered a vital insurance policy against a broken blade in the field.

This focus on resilience also yielded surprising weather resistance. Despite its low chromium content, INFI performs far better in corrosive environments than expected, outlasting many standard tool steels and even drawing favorable comparisons from Busse to certain traditional stainless steels.
As Busse Combat grew, INFI became the bedrock of the company, defining everything from compact field knives to massive, heavy-impact choppers. While sister brands within the Busse family occasionally utilized other proprietary steels like SR-101 to meet specific production goals, INFI remained the gold standard for collectors and users alike. Its frequently compared to robust steels like A8 Modified, CPM 3V, and S7. In an era increasingly dominated by laboratory super-steels and competitive performance charts, INFI represents a different, time-tested philosophy: building a blade that can absorb a beating, resist environmental ruin, and keep cutting long after other steels have failed.
