Blade Steel: Vanax

Blade Steel: Vanax

Emerging in 2006, Vanax35 and Vanax75 served as early iterations, showcasing the immense potential of nitrogen-based steels with their unparalleled corrosion resistance. However, their focus remained firmly on industrial environments. 2017 marked a pivotal moment, with the unveiling of Vanax Super Clean (also known as Vanax 37) at the Blade Show. This marked a strategic shift for Bohler-Uddeholm, signifying their commitment to environmental sustainability and entry into the world of high-performance cutlery. This latest generation steel promised more than just impressive toughness; it embodied a dedicated pursuit of crafting exceptional blades.

But what truly sets Vanax Super Clean apart lies within its unique composition. Unlike conventional steels that rely heavily on carbon, Vanax Super Clean utilizes a higher nitrogen content (1.55%) compared to carbon (0.36%). This strategic element swap unlocks the steel's phenomenal corrosion resistance, positioning it among the elite in terms of rust-free performance.

Furthermore, 18.2% chromium bolsters its defensive capabilities, enabling it to withstand even the most challenging environments. Additional key ingredients that contribute to its remarkable properties are 1.1% Molybdenum, to help with machining and workability, 3.5% Vanadium for wear resistance and toughness, and 0.3% Manganese and Silicon for grain structure and hardening ability.

With a hardness ranging from 60 to 62 HRC, Vanax Super Clean strikes a perfect balance between resilience and performance. Its industrial origins, however, provided an unexpected advantage – a foundation of exceptional strength and reliability, perfectly translated into the realm of knifemaking.

The journey from powdered form to finished blade is no less intricate. The alloying elements are meticulously melted and atomized under high-pressure nitrogen gas, resulting in a fine powder with immense potential. This powder then undergoes hot isostatic pressing, where it is heated up to 2000 degrees while being placed under extreme pressure, transforming it into a dense and uniform ingot, the bedrock for future blades. Subsequent forging and rolling processes shape the steel into its final form, followed by rigorous testing to ensure each batch meets the highest quality standards.

Vanax Super Clean represents a significant advancement in blade steel technology, offering a combination of features that cater to the highest demands of knife users.
