Bradford Knives represents the marriage of passion, precision, and innovation. Its founder, Brad Larkin, has combined a lifetime of respect for fine craftsmanship with technical expertise to create a brand that resonates with enthusiasts, collectors, and practical users alike. The journey of Bradford Knives is rooted in humble beginnings, bold decisions, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Bradford Larkin’s appreciation for knives began at a young age and stayed with him throughout his career. Before founding Bradford Knives, he worked as a machine operator for the family business, Larkin Precision, a company known for its expertise in grinding and machining. This hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology gave Brad an intimate understanding of high-grade materials and manufacturing processes.

In 2011, Brad had a vision that would redefine his future. Drawing on his passion and access to precision machinery, he shared his idea with his wife: to create the finest American-made steak knife ever produced. While the idea of draining their modest savings seemed audacious, his wife supported him, recognizing his drive and creativity. With that leap of faith, the Gatsby steak knife was born.

The Gatsby steak knife set the foundation for Bradford Knives. Designed with Bohler M390 steel, a high-performance material praised for its edge retention and corrosion resistance, the Gatsby was unique. Its plain, serration-free edge preserved steak texture, offering a superior dining experience. The knife was an instant success, selling out faster than Brad anticipated.

However, what surprised Brad was how customers were using the Gatsby beyond its intended purpose. From gardening to food prep to outdoor activities, users praised the knife’s versatility and the superior performance of M390 steel. This unexpected feedback sparked an idea: why not adapt the qualities of the Gatsby into a design better suited for everyday use? This realization marked the beginning of Bradford Knives’ transformation into a full-fledged knife brand.

In 2012, Bradford Knives officially debuted the Guardian 3, a compact fixed blade that quickly became its flagship model. Designed as a versatile EDC tool, it stood out for its safety, affordability, and practicality. The fixed blade eliminated risks of accidental opening, offered premium performance at a lower cost than many folders, and featured a horizontal sheath for comfortable carry. Its ergonomic design and reliability won over customers, many of whom transitioned from folding knives to embrace its functionality and ease of use.

Building on the success of the Guardian 3, Bradford Knives expanded the Guardian Series to include larger models such as the Guardian 4 and Guardian 6. These knives catered to outdoor enthusiasts and professionals seeking robust tools for heavy-duty tasks. The series also became known for its customization options, allowing users to select from a variety of blade steels, finishes, and handle materials.

Bradford Knives didn’t stop with the Guardian Series. The company introduced innovative designs such as the G-Necker, a minimalist neck knife, and the Bradford Culinary Set, which brought Bradford’s signature craftsmanship into the kitchen. Each new release showcased the brand’s versatility and commitment to creating high-performance knives for different needs.

Today, Bradford Knives continues to operate from Kent, Washington, with a focus on American-made craftsmanship. Despite its growth, the company remains true to its roots, emphasizing quality over quantity. Brad’s dedication to listening to customer feedback has driven many innovations, and the brand has gained recognition in the knife community for its exceptional products.

The Guardian 3 remains a cornerstone of the lineup, but the company’s willingness to explore new designs and materials ensures its relevance in a competitive market. With a loyal following and a reputation for excellence, Bradford Knives is well-positioned for continued success.

Brad Larkin’s journey from a machine operator to the founder of a respected knife brand exemplifies passion and perseverance. As Bradford Knives moves forward, the company aims to expand its offerings, explore new technologies, and maintain its commitment to quality. Whether through high-performance fixed blades or ventures into new categories, Bradford Knives remains focused on delivering tools that exceed expectations.
