Fällkniven
Published: February 24th, 2025
Founded in 1984 by Peter Hjortberger in Boden, Sweden, Fällkniven started as a small family business focused on importing knives. Over time, the company transformed into one of the most respected knife manufacturers in the world. The name “Fällkniven” means “folding knife” in Swedish, which reflects the company’s early focus on these versatile tools. From humble beginnings, Fällkniven’s journey has been driven by a passion for high-quality knives that perform reliably in the toughest situations.
Initially, Fällkniven imported knives to meet the needs of hunters, fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts. However, in 1987, the company began designing its own knives. This shift was inspired by Peter Hjortberger’s love for the outdoors and his desire to create tools that met his high standards. Instead of relying on existing designs, Fällkniven set out to craft knives that balanced durability, performance, and simplicity.
This commitment to quality and practicality was put to the test in 1995 with the release of the F1 model. Designed as a survival knife, the F1 was officially adopted by the Swedish Air Force as its standard survival tool for pilots. This was a significant milestone for the company, solidifying its reputation for creating reliable, high-performing knives.
The F1’s success didn’t stop there. The knife was approved for use by U.S. Navy and Marine aircrews in November 2000, giving Fällkniven an even stronger foothold in the international market. This recognition was more than a stamp of approval, it was proof that Fällkniven knives could stand up to the demands of military professionals.
One thing that sets Fällkniven apart from other knife makers is its focus on materials. The company uses high-performance steels like laminated VG10 and 3G (SPGS-powder steel) for their blades. These steels are chosen for their strength, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. The laminated design adds even more durability by protecting the harder steel core with outer layers of softer steel. This combination ensures that the blades can handle heavy use without chipping or breaking.

Although Fällkniven is based in Sweden, the company collaborates with skilled subcontractors in Japan to manufacture its knives. Fixed blades are produced by Hattori, a renowned name in knife making while folding knives are made by Moki, another highly respected Japanese manufacturer. This partnership allows Fällkniven to maintain strict quality standards while delivering the exceptional craftsmanship that users have come to expect.

Today, Fällkniven’s knives are used by people all over the world. The brand’s lineup includes survival knives, outdoor tools, hunting knives, and even kitchen cutlery. Models like the F1, S1, and A1 have become legendary among outdoor enthusiasts for their strength and versatility. Whether you’re a bushcrafter, a hunter, or someone who simply appreciates a well-made tool, Fällkniven offers something for everyone.
Fällkniven’s journey from a small importing business to a world-renowned knife manufacturer is a story of passion, innovation, and dedication. By focusing on quality materials, functional designs, and user needs, the company has earned the trust of outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel, and everyday users alike.
Even as the company continues to grow, it remains a family-run business with deep roots in Sweden’s outdoor traditions. With over four decades of experience, Fällkniven shows no signs of slowing down. As they continue to innovate and refine their craft, Fällkniven is poised to remain a leader in the knife industry for years to come.
