In the world of knives, few names carry as much weight as Kit Carson. This pioneering knifemaker's innovative designs and exceptional craftsmanship have left a lasting mark on the industry over the past half-century. Unlike his historical namesake, the famed frontiersman, Kit Carson wields a different type of blade - one that has shaped the very course of modern knifemaking.

Born in North Georgia, Carson's fascination with knives emerged early in his life. Drafted into the Army in 1972, his interest in knives blossomed during his two decades of service. While stationed around the world, he honed his skills, transforming scraps and found materials into functional blades during his off-duty hours. Even as he supported his family, his dedication to knifemaking remained unwavering.

After retiring from the military in 1993 as Sergeant Major, Carson fully embraced his passion, becoming a full-time knifemaker. He quickly gained recognition for his practical, user-friendly designs that prioritized both form and function. His creations resonated with outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and everyday users seeking a reliable and versatile tool.

One of Carson's most significant contributions is the widespread popularization of the "flipper" opening mechanism. While flippers existed before, his revamped take on the design, often paired with a sturdy liner lock for secure blade engagement, made one-handed deployment a breeze via an ingenious protruding stud on the blade itself. With a simple flick of the finger, the blade could be brought into action swiftly and smoothly.

Carson's most iconic and recognizable design is undoubtedly the M16 series of folding knives. Inspired by the legendary rifle of the same name, these robust folders exemplified his commitment to marrying tough functionality with sleek aesthetics. The M16 featured an ergonomic grip, a stout blade profile, and his patented flipper opener – a winning combination that captured the attention of renowned knife production company Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT). Their collaboration brought the M16's innovative design to a wide audience, cementing Carson's reputation as an industry luminary.

But the CRKT M16 was just the start of Carson's prolific design career. The CRKT M4 became another hit, praised for its everyday carry comfort and utility. His diverse portfolio of unique creations, including the innovative CrossLock folder co-designed with Roy Helton for Buck Knives, showcased a willingness to chart new territory while staying true to his core philosophy of functional, user-focused construction.

Beyond his custom blades, Carson's influence extended through many collaborations with top knife producers like CRKT, Ontario Knife Company, and more. These partnerships allowed his brilliant designs to be replicated and enjoyed by legions of knife enthusiasts around the world.

A hallmark of Carson's character was his unwavering commitment to sharing his knowledge. He actively participated in the knifemaking community, mentoring aspiring knifemakers and fostering a spirit of collaboration. Carson was also an active voting member for the Knifemakers Guild. His willingness to teach and inspire others played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of bladesmiths.

His dedication to user-centric design principles and his commitment to education continue to influence countless knifemakers today. In 2012, he received well-deserved recognition for his lifetime achievements with his induction into the Cutlery Hall of Fame.

Sadly, Kit Carson passed away in 2014. However, his impact on the knifemaking world remains ever-present. His legacy lives on in the countless knifemakers he inspired, the innovative designs he produced, and the enduring popularity of his creations.
