Larry Roberts on Alone

The premise of "Alone" is simple yet daunting: ten individuals, ten chosen items, and a quest to outlast everyone else in the wilderness. Larry participated in Season Two on Vancouver Island, Canada, battling the relentless rain, and Season Five in Mongolia, facing an entirely different set of challenges. Despite not clinching the top spot, Larry's remarkable 64-day survival on Vancouver Island and 41 days in Mongolia speaks volumes about his skills and resilience.

Larry reflected on the lasting impact of his "Alone" experiences, emphasizing the boost in confidence they provided. While falling short of victory, he recognized the value of lasting over a month in the wilderness with only ten items. This newfound confidence extends beyond survival skills, allowing him to assess products for their utility in both bushcraft and everyday life.

One of the profound shifts in Larry's perspective was becoming intimately connected with nature. Living alone in the wild made him hypersensitive to every rustle of leaves and subtle breeze. Larry described a heightened awareness of nature's cues, from potential weather changes to discerning valuable resources. The experience was more than mere survival; it became a journey into a deeper understanding of the environment.

Clarifying a common misconception, Larry stressed that "Alone" is not staged. Participants are truly alone, responsible for setting up their cameras and documenting their survival journey. The isolation intensifies the experience, making every decision and encounter with nature more profound and personal.

One of Larry's ten chosen items was the L.T. Wright Genesis knife, a decision that proved vital in his survival strategy. Having reviewed numerous knives on his small YouTube channel before the show, Larry found the Genesis to be unmatched in quality and functionality. The knife's ability to perform precise tasks, such as batoning firewood in the rain, made it a standout choice for the challenging conditions of Vancouver Island.

After his experience on Vancouver Island, Larry approached L.T. Wright with a request for a slightly longer version of the Genesis knife. L.T. agreed but insisted on a year-long testing period, unsure of how the longer blade would function on the Genesis. Larry rigorously tested the prototype, subjecting it to extreme conditions, including Minnesota's cold weather. The result was a 6-inch blade that demonstrated remarkable durability, flexing and twisting under pressure but returning back to its original state.

Larry's endorsement of L.T. Wright knives extends beyond their quality; it encompasses the exceptional customer service and the genuine nature of the company and its crew.

Beyond survival necessities, Larry highlighted the remarkable beauty he encountered during his solitary journey. From familiar trees becoming landmarks to witnessing a bald eagle in flight, the experience enriched his appreciation for the smallest wonders of nature, creating lasting memories
