Lishen Knives
Published: May 13th, 2026
Christian Lishen’s path to knife making began in a small town in Florida, where his love for crafting and working with his hands was first sparked. Raised in Pierson, Florida, a rural town known for its massive production of leatherleaf ferns, Christian’s early years didn’t exactly scream future knife maker. However, his path was shaped by an unexpected exposure to blacksmithing during his youth. As a teenager, his father became the director of the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts in Delon Springs, Florida, a historical reenactment center where Christian’s introduction to blacksmithing began. At around 13, Christian was encouraged by his father to try his hand at forging, an experience that ignited a lasting fascination with metalworking.
However, life took Christian away from knife making when his family moved to Virginia at 16. Like many teenagers, the transition was challenging, and Christian temporarily put aside his blacksmithing tools. After graduating from UVA Wise, he found work at a local outdoor and sporting goods store in Bristol, Virginia, which unknowingly served as a key turning point in his knife-making journey. The outdoor store sold knives, including brands like Benchmade and Bark River, which reignited Christian’s interest. Soon after, he found himself immersed in researching and learning more about knives. By 2018 and 2019, he even started buying and selling knives, establishing growing connections in the knife community and fueling his growing passion for fixed blades.
As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020, Christian found himself at a crossroads. He had just purchased a home in February of that year, but with limited funds and the world in lockdown, he had few distractions. Inspired by his earlier experiences, Christian decided to return to knife making. Without the resources to buy professional equipment, he started with a humble setup: a $50 1x30 grinder from Harbor Freight, a drill press given to him by his father, and a small propane forge traded for hand-tied fly fishing flies. His first knives were sold for as little as $50, just enough to cover material costs and fund the next creation. By Christmas 2020, his small side project was beginning to grow, and he decided to officially start Lishen Knives in early 2021.
At the outset, Christian worked out of his basement, still juggling a part-time job while dedicating as much time as possible to his craft. By October 2021, his custom orders were fully booked for a year, and Lishen Knives was gaining a steady following. With the investment and support of family and friends, Christian was able to purchase a 2x72 belt grinder, drastically improving his production capacity. By 2023, he made the leap to full-time knife making, focusing on production fixed-blades and no longer accepting custom orders. This transition marked a turning point for the business, allowing Christian to shift from one-off custom pieces to a more streamlined, repeatable production process.

When it comes to designing knives, Christian’s philosophy is simple: to create knives that he himself would use. His design process begins with sketching, often drawing inspiration from knives he admires but with the intent to improve upon them. Whether refining the ergonomics of a handle or altering the blade shape, Christian’s goal is to make every knife functional, practical, and comfortable. After the initial sketches, Christian uses CAD to create detailed designs, which are laser cut and heat-treated before being ground and shaped by hand. Each step of the process, Christian ensures that every knife meets the standards of quality he holds.
One area where Christian particularly excels is in the choice of materials. For blade steel, Lishen Knives primarily uses AEB-L stainless steel, known for its toughness and ability to take a keen edge. While not the flashiest steel on the market, AEB-L offers an excellent balance of performance and cost-effectiveness, making it perfect for the types of outdoor knives Christian envisions. As for handle materials, Christian has a clear preference for natural woods and stabilized micarta. Desert ironwood, in particular, stands out as one of his favorites, both for its visual appeal and durability. Despite the popularity of such materials, Christian is mindful of the challenges they pose, particularly how wood can expand and contract depending on the environment, which makes quality control even more important.
Christian’s approach to quality control is thorough. Every knife is hand-ground, with careful attention paid to the details throughout each step of production. Lishen Knives has a strict inspection process to ensure that knives meet its high standards before being shipped. For those that don’t quite make the cut but are still fully functional, Lishen Knives offers a “second sale” program. These knives, which are marked with notches to indicate the specific issue, whether it be a handle imperfection (single notch) or a slight blade issue (double notch), are sold at a discount. By notching the knives, this ensures that customers are fully aware of what they’re purchasing, and it allows Lishen Knives to sell fully functional knives that would otherwise go unused.

In addition to producing their own knives, Lishen Knives has also worked with other manufacturers and brands on limited collaborations. Notable partnerships include a charity event with Blackfeather Knives and a co-branded Pineland Field Knife with Pineland Outdoor Research. These collaborations have helped Lishen Knives grow its presence in the market while also supporting good causes and fostering relationships within the knife community.
In early 2023, Lishen Knives reached another pivotal moment. Christian and his team moved out of their basement and into a dedicated shop space. This transition marked a new chapter for the business, allowing Christian to expand production while still maintaining the quality and attention to detail that define Lishen Knives. The shop now operates with a small team of four: Christian, his wife Cass, a leatherworker, and a new hire. While Christian’s hands-on approach remains at the heart of the operation, the addition of team members has allowed the business to streamline processes and keep up with growing demand. The future looks promising as Lishen Knives continues to expand, with plans to collaborate with established retailers and to create exclusive projects that will introduce the brand to an even wider audience.

Lishen Knives is also steadily gaining recognition within the knife community, not only through word of mouth but also at knife shows. Christian and his team are quickly becoming regulars at events such as the Georgia Bushcraft Fall Gathering, Blade Show Atlanta, and the SMKW Fall Festival. These events provide an invaluable opportunity to connect with customers, fellow makers, and dealers, while showcasing their growing range of knives to a larger market.
Looking ahead, Christian’s dedication to his craft remains unwavering. Every knife that leaves the shop is a reflection of the values that Lishen Knives holds dear: quality, functionality, and customer satisfaction. This commitment to excellence has set the company apart from others in the industry, and as the business grows, Christian’s passion for knife making and his desire to build meaningful connections with the knife community will remain at the heart of Lishen Knives. With the shop now established, a growing team, and an increasing presence at key events, Lishen Knives is primed to continue making its mark in the knife world, one meticulously crafted blade at a time.
