Morakniv
Published: February 26th, 2025
Morakniv’s history is deeply rooted in the rich knife-making traditions of Mora, Sweden, with a legacy spanning over 400 years. The brand's journey began in 1891 when Frost-Erik Erson returned to Östnor, Mora, after working as a lumberjack in North America. That same year, he established a timber sled factory that also produced knives for internal use. Resourcefulness was key, as leftover materials from sled production were repurposed to craft these knives, a practice that soon evolved into a successful business model.
The quality and functionality of these knives quickly gained recognition. Traveling farm traders distributed them across Sweden, and by the early 20th century, Morakniv had established a strong presence among craftsmen. Exports expanded to Europe, with wholesalers, gunsmiths, and iron traders among the primary buyers. By 1904, Frosts employed ten workers and produced 19,000 knives annually, focusing exclusively on knife manufacturing.
In 1912, Krang-Johan Eriksson, after parting ways with Frosts, founded his own knife production company in Östnor. His venture contributed significantly to the region's knife-making industry. During the 1920s and 1930s, Mora solidified its global reputation, prompting the addition of "Sweden" to the blade stamp to emphasize its origins. This era also introduced the iconic red-stained handle, initially crafted from untreated birch and later painted to resemble mahogany, becoming a distinctive feature of Mora knives.
The mid-20th century witnessed further consolidation within the industry. In the early 1960s, KJ Eriksson acquired Bud-Carl Andersson's knife factory, known for producing ice drills under the "Mora-borren" brand. This acquisition was among several that eventually led to the unification of Mora's knife manufacturers.

This merger unified their rich histories and combined traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. In 2016, the company rebranded as Morakniv AB, consolidating all production into its state-of-the-art facility in Östnor, Mora, where the factory remains today.
