The story of White River Knife and Tool begins long before the company's founding in 2010. Its roots trace back to the early 1990s when the Cammenga family was involved in manufacturing compasses for the U.S. military and commercial sporting goods market. Their company, Cammenga Corp, became well-known for producing high-quality compasses, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become one of America's premier knife makers.

During those early years, the Cammenga family attended the SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) annually, building connections in the outdoor industry that would prove invaluable down the road. The sons of the family grew up immersed in this business from a young age, gaining hands-on experience that would shape their future careers.

In 2005, a pivotal moment arrived when the family sold their compass manufacturing business. While his father retired, John Cammenga Sr. found he wasn't quite ready to step away from the business world. After a few years of business brokering, an unexpected opportunity arose that would set the stage for White River's creation.

A bank approached John about helping to sell some foreclosed equipment geared toward knife making. This sparked an idea, and within weeks, John, his wife, and two of their sons (John Jr. and Matt Cammenga) launched White River Knife and Tool in 2010. The company takes its name from the White River in Michigan that runs through the family's property in the Manistee National Forest.

The decision to enter the knife industry was driven by two key factors. First, the family's extensive contacts from their years in the compass business and attending the SHOT Show provided a strong foundation. Second, they are passionate knife users themselves, whether in the kitchen, fishing, or hunting. This combination of industry connections and personal enthusiasm set White River on a path to success.

From the very beginning, White River was committed to being an all-American company. They made the deliberate choice to source all materials domestically and keep manufacturing in the United States, even if it meant higher production costs. This dedication to American-made quality has remained a cornerstone of the company's identity.

White River's reputation in the knife world grew quickly, thanks in part to some key collaborations. In the early 2010s, renowned custom knife maker Jerry Fisk approached the company with an idea. Known for his exclusive custom pieces, Fisk wanted to create a more accessible version of his designs that everyone could afford. This partnership not only boosted White River's credibility in the industry but also pushed them to elevate their standards for fit and finish.

Another pivotal collaboration came with fellow Michigander and knife designer Jason Tietz. Tietz's designs led to the creation of the popular FireCraft series, which debuted at the 2016 Blade Show, and remains a cornerstone of White River's lineup today.

While White River has expanded its offerings over the years, its flagship model remains the M1. Available in Backpacker, Caper, and Pro variants, the M1's versatility as both an everyday carry and outdoor knife has made it a perennial bestseller. The knife's ergonomic design, featuring a high finger choil with chamfered edges, allows it to comfortably fit a wide range of hand sizes.

At its core, White River Knife and Tool remains a true family business. John Sr, his wife, and their sons continue to own and operate the company, which now employs around a dozen people. This close-knit structure allows for a collaborative design process, with each family member bringing their unique skills to the table.

John Jr. specializes in CAD design and grinding equipment programming, while his brother Matt excels in G-code programming for CNC machines and manages much of the sales and marketing. The design process typically begins with John Jr., who creates the initial design. Matt then refines and optimizes it for production. After a group review, John Sr. provides the final approval.

This family dynamic extends to the entire White River team, with the small crew often sharing lunch and fostering a drama-free work environment. The company takes pride in its low turnover rate, having built a solid, dedicated team over the years.

Over its nearly two decades in business, White River has achieved several significant milestones. “Simply surviving and thriving for over ten years in a competitive industry is an accomplishment in itself”, marked John Sr. The collaborations with Jerry Fisk and Jason Tietz marked important steps in the company's growth and reputation.

White River has also built a strong reputation as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) maker, producing knives for numerous other brands. This aspect of the business has grown substantially, with both American and international companies turning to White River for their US-made knife production needs.

As White River Knife and Tool continues to evolve, the company is expanding into new territory. In 2024, they debuted their first-ever slip joint knife at the Las Vegas SHOT Show, marking their entry into the world of folding knives. This traditional-style folder dubbed the "Trail Head Trapper," has generated significant excitement among dealers and knife enthusiasts alike.
