History of Work Sharp
Work Sharp is a distinguished brand under Darex, LLC, established in 1973 in Ashland, Oregon, by Howard McGhee and his son David McGhee. The company's name, Darex, originates from David and Ruth McGhee's names combined with "Excellence," embodying their dedication to superior performance. Initially, Darex focused on creating high-quality drill bit sharpeners for industrial and commercial use. Over time, they expanded their product line to include sharpeners for other tools such as end mills and taps, gaining a reputation for innovation and quality in the tool sharpening industry.
Recognizing a growing need for high-quality, easy-to-use sharpeners for various users, Darex leveraged its expertise in sharpening technology to create a consumer-friendly line. In 2007, they launched the Work Sharp brand, introducing the WS2000 tool sharpener designed for woodworkers, hobbyists, and DIY enthusiasts. This product set the foundation for the brand's future, showcasing its commitment to innovation and quality.
A major milestone for Work Sharp was the introduction of the Knife & Tool Sharpener in 2010, developed in collaboration with legendary knife maker Ken Onion. The Work Sharp Ken Onion sharpener revolutionized the market with its professional-grade capabilities and user-friendly design, featuring precision sharpening guides and flexible abrasive belts suitable for a wide range of blades and tools. The success of this product solidified Work Sharp's reputation as a leader in the consumer-sharpening industry.
Work Sharp continually improved its products based on user feedback and industry expertise. In 2012, they released the Guided Field Sharpener, a compact, all-in-one solution for outdoor enthusiasts. This portable sharpener became a favorite among hunters, campers, and fishermen for its versatility and ease of use. The collaboration with Ken Onion continued to be a hallmark of the brand, leading to the launch of the upgraded Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener in 2014, which featured adjustable sharpening guides, variable speed control, and a broader range of abrasive belts.
