Created through the Piratech x 薪-Studio collaboration, this striking titanium inlay transforms the Saga's clean profile into a piece of functional artwork.
Before a single laser pass was made, the Golden Dragon Scales pattern began as a clay sculpture. This traditional technique allowed the team to determine the pattern's placement, depth, and overall shape while studying how light would interact with the three-dimensional surface. Clay modeling has been used for generations in the creation of 3D artwork and has even played an important role in automotive design, where physical models help designers evaluate form before committing to production.
Once the clay sculpture was refined and approved, it was scanned and converted into a detailed 3D digital model. That model became the foundation for the laser engraving process, allowing the intricate dragon scale pattern to be reproduced with remarkable depth and precision across the titanium surface.
The engraving process alone took approximately 30 hours. Titanium presents a greater challenge for laser engraving than materials such as brass or copper, requiring a lower-power laser and slower processing speed to achieve the necessary level of detail. The extended machining time reflects the level of attention invested in creating the finished pattern. Each contour and scale contributes to the three-dimensional effect, producing a surface that catches and reflects light from different angles.
Milled and laser engraved from titanium, the inlay features a rich gold finish that gives the Saga a bold, premium appearance. At just 17.8 grams, it adds distinctive character without dramatically changing the knife's overall feel. Four magnets are included with the inlay for installation.
