The TOPS Hayden Creek Front Edge Sharp Fixed Blade is a purpose-built ranch utility and hunting knife designed for demanding work in the field. Created by Eric Sanderson for TOPS Knives' annual Employee Design Challenge, the Hayden Creek draws on firsthand experience in cattle ranching, hunting, and the knife industry. Sanderson set out to improve upon traditional castration knives, which often feature polished bone or wood handles that become slippery when exposed to blood, moisture, and mud. The result is a rugged, practical fixed blade that combines a specialized rounded-tip design with a dependable grip and versatile cutting performance. Whether you're working livestock, caping game, or tackling everyday ranch duties, this knife is built to handle the job.
The 3.25-inch blade is crafted from 1095 high-carbon steel, a proven material valued for its toughness, durability, and ability to take a reliable edge. Heat treated to 56-58 HRC, it offers a practical balance of strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. The blade features a black traction coating that provides a non-reflective finish while helping protect the steel against wear and corrosion. Measuring 0.19 inches thick, the blade has a substantial construction suited for demanding utility work. Its distinctive rounded-tip profile combines elements of a traditional castration knife with a beaver-tail-inspired skinning design. This HNCK-02 version features a sharpened 0.88-inch front edge along with a 2.75-inch main cutting edge, making it particularly useful for caping, skinning, and other detailed cutting tasks. The rounded nose provides added control when working close to livestock or other sensitive areas.
The 7.13-inch overall design features a Tan Canvas Micarta handle built for a secure, dependable grip in challenging conditions. Unlike traditional polished bone and wood handles, Canvas Micarta maintains a more reliable feel when exposed to blood, rain, and mud. Its rugged construction and comfortable ergonomics make it well suited for repeated use around the ranch or in the field. Weighing just 5.4 ounces, the Hayden Creek offers substantial construction without becoming unnecessarily cumbersome.
For convenient carry and storage, TOPS includes a brown leather sheath featuring a multi-position, ambidextrous design. Its versatile belt-loop configuration accommodates different carry preferences while keeping the knife protected and accessible. The complete package weighs 9 ounces with the sheath.
Designed by someone who understands the demands of ranching and hunting firsthand, the TOPS Hayden Creek Front Edge Sharp is more than just another fixed blade. It's a purpose-driven working knife built around practical experience, dependable materials, and thoughtful design. Whether you're a cattle rancher, hunter, or outdoorsman, this rugged TOPS creation is ready to earn its place among your everyday working tools.
