The TOPS Hayden Creek Single Edge Fixed Blade is a purpose-built ranch utility and hunting knife designed for demanding work in the field. Created by Eric Sanderson, an experienced cattle rancher, avid hunter, and longtime member of the knife industry, the Hayden Creek was developed for TOPS Knives' annual Employee Design Challenge. Drawing from firsthand experience, Sanderson set out to improve upon traditional ranch knives by creating a dependable tool that maintains a secure grip during wet, messy conditions. Whether you're handling livestock, working around the ranch, or preparing game in the field, this rugged fixed blade delivers practical performance where it matters most.
The 3.25-inch blade is crafted from 1095 high-carbon steel, a proven material valued for its toughness, durability, and dependable cutting performance. Heat treated to 56-58 HRC, the blade offers a practical balance of strength and edge retention while remaining relatively easy to sharpen when needed. A black traction coating provides a subdued appearance while helping protect the steel against wear and corrosion. Measuring 0.19 inches thick, the blade has a substantial construction suited for demanding utility work. Its distinctive rounded tip combines elements of a traditional castration knife with a beaver-tail-inspired skinning profile, providing a useful design for both ranch work and hunting applications. The main cutting edge measures 2.75 inches, offering controlled cutting performance for detailed tasks. The Hayden Creek is available with an unsharpened edge for livestock work or a sharpened edge for caping and processing game, depending on the intended application.
The 7.13-inch overall design features a Tan Canvas Micarta handle engineered for a dependable grip when conditions get messy. Unlike traditional polished bone and wood handles that can become slippery when exposed to moisture, blood, and mud, Canvas Micarta provides a more secure, practical gripping surface. Its rugged construction and comfortable feel make it well suited for the repeated demands of ranch and field use. Weighing just 5.4 ounces, the Hayden Creek offers substantial construction without becoming unnecessarily cumbersome.
For convenient carry and storage, TOPS includes a brown leather sheath featuring a multi-position, ambidextrous design. Its versatile belt-loop configuration accommodates different carry preferences while keeping the knife accessible when work calls. The leather construction complements the traditional ranch-inspired character of the knife while providing dependable protection during storage and transport.
Designed from real-world ranching and hunting experience, the TOPS Hayden Creek is more than a traditional fixed blade. It's a purpose-driven working knife built around practical needs, dependable materials, and thoughtful design. Whether you're a rancher, hunter, or outdoorsman, this rugged TOPS creation is ready to earn its place among your everyday working tools.
