Born on August 27, 1933, in Eudora, Arkansas, A.G. Russell's interest in knives began at an early age. His great-grandfather, a skilled craftsman, introduced him to knife-making. By the age of nine, Russell had crafted his first blade, igniting a passion that would define his life. These early experiences laid the foundation for his deep understanding of knives as both functional tools and artistic expressions.
In 1964, Russell officially launched his knife business, initially focusing on selling Arkansas whetstones. Within a year, his operation expanded to include high-quality knives, many of his own designs. Russell’s entrepreneurial spirit and innovative marketing quickly set him apart. In 1968, he introduced one of the first direct-mail catalogs for knives, revolutionizing how collectors and enthusiasts accessed unique and high-quality blades. This innovation brought a new level of professionalism and accessibility to the knife community.
Russell was not only a skilled craftsman and entrepreneur but also a unifier of the knife community. In 1970, he co-founded two key organizations: the Knifemakers’ Guild and the Knife Collectors Club. These groups brought together makers, collectors, and enthusiasts, creating a collaborative environment that elevated the art and science of knife-making.
Through his work with these organizations, Russell played a pivotal role in setting high standards for the industry. His influence helped ensure that craftsmanship and innovation remained central to knife-making. His contributions to these groups earned him recognition as the first inductee into the Knife Digest Cutlery Hall of Fame in 1974. Additionally, in 1988, he was honored by BLADE Magazine, which inducted him into the BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame for his contributions to the craft and industry.
