The American Tomahawk Company (ATC) has a storied history that intertwines with the fabric of American military and cultural heritage. Founded in 1966 by World War II Marine Corps veteran Peter LaGana, the company emerged from a vision to provide U.S. soldiers with a versatile and effective tool during the Vietnam War. LaGana's innovative design and the company's subsequent evolutions have solidified ATC's reputation as a premier manufacturer of tomahawks, serving both military personnel and civilians alike.

Peter LaGana, drawing from his military experience, recognized the need for a lightweight, multi-functional tool that could aid soldiers in the challenging terrains of Vietnam. In 1966, he introduced the "Vietnam Tomahawk," a design that featured a wooden handle, a uniquely crafted axe head with a reverse spike, and a leather sheath. This tomahawk was not just a weapon but a versatile tool, suitable for various tasks soldiers might encounter in the field. Between 1966 and 1970, LaGana's American Tomahawk Company produced approximately 4,000 of these tomahawks, which were primarily distributed to U.S. forces engaged in the Vietnam conflict. The Vietnam Tomahawk quickly gained a reputation for its practicality and effectiveness, becoming a sought-after item among troops.

Following the conclusion of the Vietnam War, the demand for military-specific tomahawks diminished, leading to the company's closure in the 1970s. However, the legacy of the Vietnam Tomahawk endured, and interest in the design saw a resurgence in the late 20th century. In November 2000, professional knife and tomahawk enthusiasts Andy Prisco and Bobby Branton approached LaGana with a proposal to revive the iconic design. With LaGana's approval, they re-established the American Tomahawk Company in January 2001. This revival saw the introduction of an updated version of the Vietnam Tomahawk, now featuring a synthetic handle to enhance durability while preserving the original's balance and functionality.

The early 2000s marked a period of innovation and collaboration for ATC. In 2005, the company partnered with renowned custom knife-maker Ernest Emerson to develop the Close Quarters Combat Tomahawk (CQC-T). This model was tailored for modern tactical applications, blending Emerson's expertise in knife design with ATC's tomahawk heritage. Three years later, in 2008, ATC collaborated with custom knife-maker Shane Sibert to create the "Comanche," a contemporary rendition of the Lewis and Clark spontoon tomahawk. This design was also produced under license by Fox Knives in Maniago, Italy, showcasing ATC's commitment to blending historical designs with modern craftsmanship.

In March 2019, the American Tomahawk Company underwent a significant transformation when it was acquired by RMJ Tactical, a company renowned for its high-quality tactical tools. This acquisition aimed to honor ATC's rich military history while expanding its product line to cater to a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. Under the leadership of RMJ Tactical's Ryan Johnson and Richard Carmack, along with partners Jeff Kirkham of Readyman and John Hickman, ATC recommitted to producing reliable, American-made tomahawks. The revived company emphasized the use of premium materials, with tomahawk heads forged from American 1060 steel and handles crafted from Tennessee hickory or durable synthetic materials. This dedication to quality ensured that each product could withstand rigorous use in various environments.

One of the flagship products reintroduced by the revitalized ATC is the Model 1 Tomahawk. This model pays homage to LaGana's original Vietnam Tomahawk, incorporating modern materials and manufacturing techniques to enhance performance and durability. The Model 1 features a drop-forged 1060 high carbon steel head with a black powder coat finish, and customers can choose between handles made of Tennessee hickory or Supertough Nylon 66. This blend of tradition and innovation has made the Model 1 a favorite among military personnel, outdoor adventurers, and tactical enthusiasts.

Building on the success of the Model 1, ATC introduced the Model 2 in July 2021. This new design offers a larger head with a 4.13-inch curved cutting edge, allowing for more versatile use in chopping and slicing tasks. The Model 2 also features a bearded profile, enabling users to choke up under the head for detailed work. Like its predecessor, the Model 2 is crafted from drop-forged 1060 carbon steel and comes equipped with a flat hammer on the reverse side of the head, enhancing its utility in various scenarios. The handle is made from durable nylon, ensuring a secure grip during use.

The practicality and reliability of ATC's designs have not gone unnoticed by military organizations. The company's Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk (VTAC) has been utilized by various U.S. military units, including the Army's Stryker Brigade in Afghanistan. The VTAC was assigned NATO Stock Number 4210-01-518-7244 and classified as a Class 9 rescue kit under the Rapid Fielding Initiative. This classification led to its inclusion in every Stryker vehicle as part of the Modular Entry Toolset, underscoring its value in both combat and rescue operations.

Under the leadership of RMJ Tactical, the American Tomahawk Company continues to innovate while staying true to its historical roots. The commitment to using high-quality materials, precision craftsmanship, and functional design ensures that ATC tomahawks remain a relevant and sought-after tool. Proudly made in the USA, ATC tomahawks uphold the company’s legacy of American ingenuity, durability, and performance.
