Best OTF knives of 2025 with five displayed knife designs.

The out-the-front automatic knife remains one of the most technically demanding designs in the industry, and 2025 has marked a year of significant advancement across the category. Microtech has pushed the platform further with new engineering that eliminates blade play and strengthens deployment systems. CRKT made its long-anticipated entry into the OTF market through a partnership with Hogue and designer Brian Tighe, marking a new chapter for the brand. Heretic has continued to refine its distinctive single-action design with modern steel and construction, while Boker and Heckler & Koch extended their collaboration with a model that draws directly from firearm-inspired ergonomics. Together, these releases capture the momentum of the year, showcasing how varied approaches to design and function continue to shape the future of OTF knives.

Microtech

Ultratech Gen III

The Ultratech Gen III marks a defining step in the progression of Microtech’s most influential out-the-front design. At the center of this new generation is Zero Blade Play (ZBP) technology, which eliminates the lateral movement long considered an unavoidable trait of OTF knives. The result is a lockup of uncompromising solidity, elevating the precision of the platform beyond its predecessors. Supporting this advancement is the Dual Fuel Drive Train, a twin-spring system that replaces the earlier single-spring mechanism to deliver greater force while retaining the controlled speed and reliability that define the Ultratech. The addition of the Crud Kutter system, a mechanism adapted from firearm engineering, further reinforces consistency by clearing debris from the firing channel and ensuring dependable action under real-world conditions.

While its internal design showcases major innovation, the Ultratech Gen III retains the same versatility that has kept the series at the forefront of automatic knife design. The 3.55-inch blade is forged from Böhler M390 MK steel and is currently produced in dagger, tanto, drop-point, and Hellhound blade shapes, each available in a variety of finishes. The 5-inch 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum handles are offered in a variety of anodized colors and coatings, providing both durability and distinct styling options. The Ultratech Gen III measures 8.54 inches in overall length and weighs just 3.61 ounces. Made in the USA.

UTX-85 Gen III

Building on the advancements introduced with the Ultratech Gen III, the UTX-85 Gen III incorporates the same next-generation systems into a slightly smaller platform. Zero Blade Play (ZBP) technology provides the same solid lockup, eliminating the lateral movement once considered unavoidable in OTF designs. The Dual Fuel Drive Train enhances deployment with a twin-spring mechanism, while the Crud Kutter system keeps the firing channel clear of debris for consistent action in daily use. Together, these innovations give the UTX-85 Gen III the same level of refinement as its larger counterpart, tailored to those who prefer a more compact carry.

The UTX-85 Gen III is equipped with a 3.11-inch Böhler M390MK blade, currently available in a double-edged dagger configuration, with additional blade styles anticipated in future releases. Its 6061-T6 aluminum handle measures 4.38 inches and is available in a variety of anodized colors and coatings, providing both durability and a range of visual options. With an overall length of 7.5 inches and a weight of 3.1 ounces, it delivers the same refined engineering in a mid-size form suited to everyday carry. Made in the USA.

CRKT

Twist Tighe

The Twist Tighe marks CRKT’s first step into the out-the-front automatic category, a milestone achieved through a collaboration with Hogue and the design expertise of Brian Tighe. Each model in the series is built around a 2.69-inch CPM MagnaCut spear point blade, a steel chosen for its balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Reliable double-action deployment and precision construction position the Twist Tighe as a significant addition to both CRKT’s catalog and the broader OTF market, with production carried out entirely in the USA.

Three variations were introduced in 2025, each pairing the blade with distinct styling. The Twist Tighe (Black) features a black coated blade, a black anodized aluminum handle, and a black pearl CamoCarbon fiber scale for a streamlined appearance. The Twist Tighe (Rose Quartz) is equipped with a stonewashed blade, its black anodized handle contrasted by a Hot Pink CamoCarbon fiber scale for a bold, modern look. The Twist Tighe (Green) continues the series with a stonewashed blade, matched to a Kelp Bed CamoCarbon fiber scale set into a black anodized handle. All three versions share the same dimensions, measuring 6.78 inches overall with a 4.01-inch handle length, and they weigh 1.6 ounces. Each is fitted with a slide lock mechanism and combines aluminum handles with carbon fiber inlays for strength and reduced weight. Made in the USA.

Heretic Knives

Hydra V4

The Hydra V4 continues Heretic’s reputation for distinctive OTF design, bringing forward a powerful single-action automatic built with modern materials and engineering. Its 3.75-inch CPM MagnaCut blade is offered in either a drop-point or recurve blade shape, both finished in a two-tone black treatment that provides a nice contrast while protecting the steel. A right-hand slide mechanism drives deployment, releasing the blade with the forceful, deliberate action that has become a hallmark of the Hydra series.

The handle is machined from black 6061-T6 aluminum, which provides a strong yet lightweight foundation and is shaped with subtle curves that encourage control during use. At the end of the handle, the lanyard attachment doubles as the reset mechanism, requiring a pull to close the blade after deployment. Measuring 9.25 inches in overall length and 5.5 inches closed, the Hydra V4 commands presence in hand while balancing its size with a weight of 5.32 ounces. Entirely made in the USA, this generation builds on Heretic’s signature single-action OTF, refining one of the company’s most recognizable platforms with modern steel and a design engineered for longevity.

Boker Heckler & Koch

SP02

Among the notable OTF releases of 2025, the Boker Heckler & Koch SP02 stands out as a collaboration that draws directly from HK’s firearm heritage. Built with precision and tactical function in mind, it carries a 3.15-inch double-edged dagger blade made from D2 tool steel, finished in black to resist wear and add a uniform profile to the all-black design. Its double-action mechanism drives deployment and retraction with authority, operated by a textured thumb slide that provides control and reliability in demanding situations.

The SP02’s handle is machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with a hard-anodized finish, incorporating grooves that mimic HK’s firearm ergonomics while reinforcing grip. At the base, an integrated glass breaker doubles as the blade retention and reset mechanism, underscoring the knife’s practical role as both a cutting tool and an emergency implement. Measuring 8.07 inches overall with a 4.92-inch handle and weighing 3.56 ounces, it carries on a reversible tip-down pocket clip. Made in the USA, the SP02 has quickly earned recognition as a dependable OTF designed for professionals and enthusiasts who value both rapid deployment and functional durability.
