How To: Benchmade Bugout Scale Swap

Benchmade Bugout Scale Swap

With its lightweight design and adaptability, the Benchmade Bugout series has become a favorite among EDC enthusiasts. But for some, the stock Grivory scales might lack that personal touch. Swapping scales allows you to personalize your Bugout's aesthetics and enhance its grip, making it your own.

Before you begin, gather all the necessary tools. You will need a T6 and T10 Torx driver, a clean work surface, pivot lube, and optionally, a small container to keep the screws and parts organized and Loctite Blue 242 Threadlocker for the pivot screw. Whether using a Mini Bugout or the full-sized version, make sure your new scales are ready and compatible with your model.

Using your T6 driver, remove the two pocket clip screws and set them aside separately. Locate the male pivot screw on the opposite side and remove it with your T10 driver. On the same side, unscrew the four-handle scale screws with your T6 driver.

Gently lift the scale, exposing the internal mechanism, including the omega springs and the AXIS Lock, remembering the placement of any washers or spacers underneath. Carefully remove the AXIS Lock, and omega springs along with the bottom standoff and attach it to the corresponding spot on your new scale. Flip your Bugout and repeat for the other side, transferring the other standoff.

With the original scales removed, it provides a great opportunity to clean the knife's body if necessary. A soft, lint-free cloth can remove any debris or buildup, ensuring your new scales fit perfectly.

Position the new scales onto the body of the knife. Make sure they align correctly with the screw holes and the knife's overall structure. Misalignment here can lead to issues during reassembly.

Begin reattaching the scales by first screwing in the body screws. Start on one side, lightly screwing each one in place before fully tightening them. This approach allows for adjustments as needed to ensure proper alignment. Once the body screws are in place and the scales are properly aligned, apply Loctite Blue to the pivot screw before inserting and snugly tightening it.

After reassembling, check the knife's functionality. Open and close the blade to ensure smooth operation. Feel for any looseness or misalignment that could indicate the need for further adjustment of the pivot screw.

With the final click of the pocket clip settling back into place, your Benchmade Bugout is no longer a standard offering. The familiar form now reflects your aesthetic, with a sense of ownership and satisfaction that only comes through customization.
