History of Leatherman
The story of Leatherman is more than just about a multitool; it's a testament to the power of innovation, fueled by frustration and a relentless pursuit of a better solution. In the early 1980s, a young mechanical engineer named Tim Leatherman embarked on a European road trip with his wife Chau. Their trusty Fiat 600, however, proved less reliable than romantic, requiring frequent roadside fixes. Armed with only a scout knife, Leatherman found himself constantly yearning for a more versatile and portable tool. This simple yet defining moment planted the seed that would blossom into the Leatherman Tool Group, forever changing the way we think about everyday problem-solving.
Back in his Portland, Oregon home, Leatherman's vision took shape. He envisioned a compact, foldable device that combined the functionality of a knife and pliers, along with other essential tools, ready to tackle any task, expected or unexpected. His ambition, however, soon collided with the harsh realities of bringing an innovative idea to life. From 1975 to 1983, countless rejections met his prototype, affectionately nicknamed "Mr. Crunch." Companies simply couldn't grasp the potential of his revolutionary design, leaving him without the support he desperately needed. Yet, Leatherman, fueled by an unwavering belief in his creation's utility, refused to be deterred. He tirelessly refined and improved "Mr. Crunch," determined to prove its worth.

Finally, in 1983, perseverance paid off. Partnering with college friend Steve Berliner, Leatherman established the Leatherman Tool Group. Their first offering, the Pocket Survival Tool (PST), shattered conventional tool expectations. This compact marvel packed 13 essential tools into a pocket-sized powerhouse, instantly revolutionizing how people approached everyday tasks and emergencies. The PST's success propelled Leatherman into the spotlight, paving the way for a diverse range of multitools and knives, each meticulously designed with specific users and uses in mind.
Today, Leatherman caters to a wide spectrum, from rugged outdoorsmen scaling mountains to DIY enthusiasts tackling weekend projects. Their tools, renowned for their unparalleled durability, versatility, and practicality, are crafted with high-quality materials and backed by an industry-leading 25-year warranty. This unwavering commitment to quality and innovation is a cornerstone of Leatherman's success. The company constantly pushes the boundaries of design, incorporating cutting-edge technologies and materials to enhance the functionality and durability of its products.
