Blade Steel: Nitro-V

Blade Steel: Nitro-V

Published: April 21st, 2025

Nitro-V is a stainless steel specifically engineered for knife makers, first introduced in 2017 by New Jersey Steel Baron (NJSB), a steel distributor known for catering to the cutlery industry. Nitro-V is a modified version of AEB-L, a stainless steel that was originally developed by Uddeholm for use in razor blades. AEB-L gained popularity among custom knife makers due to its ultra-fine grain structure, ease of sharpening, and impressive edge stability. Recognizing the potential for a more refined, high-performance version of AEB-L, NJSB collaborated with metallurgists to develop Nitro-V.

Composition

Carbon - 0.66-0.7%

Chromium - 12.7-13.3%

Vanadium - 0.05-0.1%

Nitrogen - 0.1-0.12%

Molybdenum - 0.3-0.5%

The primary modification from AEB-L to Nitro-V involves the addition of nitrogen and vanadium to the steel’s chemistry. These additions significantly enhance the alloy’s performance, improving wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and toughness without compromising its fine grain structure. Nitrogen helps increase hardness and corrosion resistance, while vanadium promotes grain refinement and enhances wear resistance. The resulting steel offers a well-balanced combination of attributes, making it highly attractive to both custom and production knife makers.

Nitro-V can be heat-treated to achieve hardness levels in the range of 58 to 63 HRC, depending on the desired balance between edge retention and toughness. Austenitizing is typically done at temperatures between 1900°F and 2000°F, with either plate or oil quenching used to bring the steel down quickly through the critical temperature range. While cryogenic treatment is not required, it is frequently employed to transform retained austenite and push the steel toward its maximum potential hardness and performance. Thanks to its predictable response to heat treatment and fine-grained microstructure, Nitro-V can be ground to very thin edge geometries and still maintain exceptional stability under use.

In terms of performance comparisons, Nitro-V is often seen as a step up from AEB-L and a viable alternative to Sandvik’s 14C28N. While all three steels share a similar lineage and grain structure, Nitro-V’s inclusion of vanadium sets it apart, offering additional hardness and wear resistance without making the steel overly brittle or difficult to sharpen. Compared to high-carbide steels like 154CM or CPM-S30V, Nitro-V typically offers better toughness and sharpenability, although it may not match their wear resistance in extremely abrasive environments. However, its more user-friendly characteristics make it an excellent choice for those who value ease of maintenance and reliable, all-around performance.

Because of its balanced properties and versatility, Nitro-V has found favor among custom knife makers and larger manufacturers alike. It processes well using standard knife-making tools and techniques and is forgiving to work with during heat treatment. Whether used in an EDC folder or a full-tang outdoor survival knife, Nitro-V provides a strong combination of cutting performance, corrosion resistance, and toughness that makes it one of the most well-rounded stainless steels available in modern knife making.
