Veteran Owned Knife Companies
Published: May 25th, 2026
Memorial Day is a time of remembrance of those who gave everything in service to our nation. It is also an opportunity to honor the warrior-craftsman spirit that many veterans carry home with them. For the founders of these companies, a knife was never just a piece of gear; it was a lifeline, a survival tool, and a constant companion in the world’s most unforgiving environments. Having experienced the failures of mass-produced equipment in the field, these veterans transitioned from the front lines to the forge, driven by a singular mission: to build the tools they wished they’d had when it mattered most.
From backyard shops powered by makeshift grinders to state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, these brands represent the pinnacle of American grit and ingenuity. When you carry a blade from a veteran-owned company, you are carrying decades of combat experience, specialized expertise, and an unwavering commitment to quality that only a life of service can instill. This Memorial Day, we’re proud to highlight the veteran-owned knife companies that continue to serve by equipping the next generation of operators, adventurers, and enthusiasts with tools that are truly built to last a lifetime.
TOPS Knives
TOPS Knives was founded in 1998 in the rugged landscape of Eastern Idaho by a group of veteran founders with deep ties in the military and law enforcement communities. Driven by their dissatisfaction with the durability of issued gear during the Vietnam War era, the founders, including co-founder and former CEO Mike Fuller, an ex-Green Beret, set out to create knives that could withstand the most extreme operational environments.
TOPS is known for its overbuilt feel and its mastery of 1095 carbon steel, often finished with a coating for corrosion resistance and wear resilience. TOPS is also known for its high-profile collaborations with survival experts and tactical operators, most notably producing the Tom Brown Tracker, which gained international fame after being featured in the film The Hunted. Other staples like the B.O.B. (Brothers of Bushcraft) Fieldcraft have become gold standards for the bushcraft community. Now led by Leo Espinoza, TOPS continues to manufacture every blade in the USA, maintaining a massive catalog of specialized tools designed for those whose lives depend on their gear.
Toor Knives
Founded in 2014 by brothers Connor and Cameron Toor, Toor Knives was born from a necessity recognized on the battlefield. With backgrounds as a Marine Corps Scout Rifleman and an Army Ranger, the brothers experienced firsthand the shortcomings of mass-produced tactical blades. They began their journey in a San Diego backyard, using a makeshift forge to craft mission-specific tools for their deploying teammates.
Today, Toor Knives is a premier American knife manufacturer, operating out of a state-of-the-art facility in El Cajon, California. They are staunchly committed to a 100% in-house production model, ensuring that every step, from CNC machining and heat treating to hand-grinding, is done in their facility by American hands. Their lineup, featuring staples like the Anaconda and Krypteia, utilizes high-end materials such as CPM 3V steel and G10 handles. By blending elite military experience with precision engineering, Toor Knives produces rugged, purpose-built tools that serve tactical operators, first responders, and outdoor enthusiasts with equal reliability. Their mission remains simple: honoring those who serve by providing tools that perform when it matters most.
Medford Knife & Tool
Founded in 2010 by Greg Medford, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Medford Knife & Tool is defined by a no-compromise approach to American manufacturing. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the company has earned a dedicated following for its overbuilt philosophy, creating tools that favor structural integrity and extreme durability over lightweight trends. Medford’s background as a 0311 Infantryman, combined with his expertise as a commercial pilot and martial artist, heavily influences the industrial, mission-ready designs of his knives.
Medford Knife & Tool is best known for the Praetorian series, a line of folding knives featuring massive blade stock and robust titanium frames that have become icons of the tactical knife world. Other popular models, like the Slim Midi Marauder, offer the brand's signature strength in a more pocket-friendly profile. Every Medford knife is hand-assembled and finished in-house, utilizing premium American materials sourced from domestic partners. By refusing to outsource even the smallest components, Medford ensures that every tool is a true reflection of American grit and craftsmanship, designed to outlast its owner.
Spartan Blades
Established in 2008 in Southern Pines, North Carolina, Spartan Blades is the brainchild of retired U.S. Army Special Forces NCOs Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey. With combined decades of service, the founders set out to apply the Spartan ethos of strength and resilience to the cutlery industry. Their mission was clear: to develop knives that bridge the gap between custom craftsmanship and hard-use tactical tools.
Spartan Blades is known for its high-tier collaborations, most notably with legendary designer William “Bill” Harsey. This partnership birthed the iconic Spartan Harsey Folder (SHF), which earned the prestigious American-Made Knife of the Year award at Blade Show. In 2019, Spartan Blades entered a strategic merger with KA-BAR to form Pineland Cutlery, Inc., allowing them to categorize their offerings into three distinct tiers: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. This structuring ensures that whether a user needs an heirloom piece or a rugged field survival knife, they receive a blade that's up for any task put in its way. By combining modern CNC technology with meticulous hand-finishing, Spartan Blades continues to set the standard for tools that are as striking as they are indestructible.
Stroup Knives
Stroup Knives is a veteran-owned and family-operated business founded in 2017 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, that is built on the philosophy of one knife, every situation. The company was started by Chris Stroup, a U.S. Army combat veteran who turned to the art of knifemaking after his service. What began as a personal journey to find purpose after the military quickly evolved into a mission-driven brand, with Chris, his wife Meagan, and their children working together to produce rugged, no-nonsense tools for those who demand reliability.
Stroup Knives is known for its distinct finishes and rugged designs that prioritize function over flash. Their blades are primarily crafted from 1095 high-carbon steel, which is chosen for its extreme toughness and ease of field sharpening. Models like the Bravo 5 and the TU2 feature full-tang construction and textured G10 or Micarta handles, ensuring a secure grip in the harshest environments. As an integral part of the local military community, the company also produces the official legacy dagger issued to every U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier for the Green Beret Foundation, cementing its bond with the elite military units stationed nearby. Every Stroup knife is handmade in the USA and designed to be a dependable lifeline even at the end of the world.
Half Face Blades
Founded in 2015 by retired Navy SEAL Andrew Arrabito, Half Face Blades is the manifestation of a warrior-meets-craftsman lifestyle. Arrabito’s path to knifemaking was forged through a decade of elite service with SEAL Team 5, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After a serious hand injury during a shipboarding operation led to his medical retirement, Arrabito returned to his childhood roots in primitive survival and wilderness skills, beginning HFB as a backyard project to supply his teammates with superior, mission-ready tools.
The name Half Face is a reference to the war paint Arrabito wore during his time in the Teams, symbolizing the duality between the wild and the composed. Half Face Blades is renowned for its functional art approach, producing handmade tools in San Diego that are as visually striking as they are rugged. Flagship models like the Crow Jr. and the Disaster Jr. utilize CPM S45VN steel and handle materials like G10 and Micarta. Beyond fixed blades, Half Face Blades has expanded into folding knives and axes, all while maintaining a deep commitment to veteran causes, including the Warriors' Choice Foundation. For Arrabito, every blade is a promise of reliability to those who live life with purpose.
McNees Knives
Located in Vernon, Alabama, McNees Knives is the result of founder Jonathan McNees’ lifelong obsession with edged tools and his transition from the U.S. Marine Corps to master bladesmith. During his service in a specialized small craft unit, McNees was known as his platoon’s knife guy, a reputation that followed him into civilian life. What began as a hobby in a 400-square-foot backyard shop, utilizing a "Franken-grinder" built from lawnmower parts, has grown into a sophisticated 3,500-square-foot manufacturing powerhouse.
McNees is perhaps best known for the MAC 2 series, a line of folders known for their snappy action and precision tolerances. McNees taught himself 3D modeling and CNC programming to ensure every aspect of production stayed in-house. This dedication to domestic quality was recently cemented when the McNees Ridge Runner, a robust fixed blade, won the 2024 American Made Fixed Blade of the Year at Blade Show 2024. Whether through his popular Spyderco McBee collaboration or his in-house CPM-MagnaCut designs, McNees continues to blend Marine Corps grit with high-tech engineering to create some of the most sought-after tools in the industry.
Skallywag Tactical
Skallywag Tactical was founded in 2016 with the vision of Craig Burhart and a team of seasoned veterans and law enforcement professionals. Operating with a no-compromise mentality, the company focuses on creating knives for the toughest challenges life throws at you. By blending tactical focus with precision engineering, they have built a reputation for producing specialized blades that bridge the gap between traditional weaponry and modern utility.
Skallywag is widely recognized for its aggressive, purpose-built designs like the Scorpion and the MDV Plus One, a pocket-sized recurve blade designed for rapid deployment. Recently, the company deepened its commitment to American quality through a strategic manufacturing partnership with Toor Knives, ensuring their knives remain rugged, reliable, and strictly mission-capable. From the ringed-handle ergonomics of their CQC tools to their hard-wearing PVD coatings, Skallywag Tactical produces gear for those who work in the world’s most unforgiving shadows.
EIKONIC Knife Company
EIKONIC Knife Company entered the market through a partnership between U.S. Marine veteran Jonathan Golveo and industry expert Carlton Schumacher. This collaboration combined Golveo’s perspective as a competitive shooter and veteran with Schumacher’s experience at leading brands like Kershaw and Zero Tolerance. Together, they launched EIKONIC with the mission of making world-class, designer-level knives accessible to a wider audience without the premium price tag typically associated with high-end customs.
EIKONIC has carved out a unique space by partnering with some of the most respected designers in the knife world, including Brian Brown, Ramon Chaves, and Brian Nadeau. These collaborations result in production models like the RCK9 and the Dromas, which offer custom-tier ergonomics and precision at a fraction of the cost. EIKONIC’s reputation for quality recently led to a high-profile partnership with SIG SAUER, resulting in a specialized knife collection designed to integrate seamlessly with tactical firearms. By utilizing high-performance materials like CPM-S35VN, D2, and Nitro-V steel alongside ceramic ball-bearing pivots, EIKONIC delivers smooth, reliable tools that cater to both the professional operator and the daily carry enthusiast.
