Blade Steel: Elmax SuperClean
Published: May 28th, 2025
Elmax SuperClean, more commonly referred to simply as Elmax, is a high-performance stainless steel developed by Böhler-Uddeholm in 2009. Originally created for the injection molding and technology industries, Elmax wasn’t initially intended for knives, but its unique combination of qualities quickly captured the attention of blade makers and enthusiasts worldwide. The steel is produced using an advanced powdered metallurgy process that allows for a finely-tuned and uniform distribution of carbides, resulting in a blade material that combines exceptional wear resistance, strength, and corrosion resistance with a high level of machinability and polishability.
The composition of Elmax includes 1.7% carbon, 18% chromium, 1% molybdenum, 3% vanadium, 0.3% manganese, and 0.8% silicon. This carefully balanced formula is what gives Elmax its distinctive qualities. The high carbon content delivers impressive hardness and edge retention, enabling blades to stay sharp even under prolonged and demanding use. Chromium, present in a substantial 18%, contributes significantly to the steel’s corrosion resistance, ensuring that knives made with Elmax remain resilient in wet or humid conditions. The inclusion of molybdenum and vanadium bolsters the steel’s strength, toughness, and wear resistance, helping prevent chips and cracks that can develop with more brittle steels. Vanadium also plays a role in refining the grain structure, which leads to a stronger, more stable edge.
Compostion
Carbon - 1.7%
Chromium - 18%
Molybdenum - 1%
Vanadium - 3%
Manganese - 0.3%
Silicon - 0.8%
One of the most remarkable aspects of Elmax is its ability to maintain a razor-sharp edge for long periods without sacrificing toughness. Most steels offer either good edge retention or high impact resistance, but rarely both. Elmax defies that trade-off, delivering a combination of high hardness, typically reaching 61 to 62 on the Rockwell Hardness Scale, and enough structural integrity to resist chipping and rolling under stress. This unique balance is a direct result of the powder metallurgy process, which produces a fine-grained, evenly distributed microstructure that outperforms conventionally made steels.
Because of its performance profile, Elmax has found a devoted following among knife manufacturers and users alike. Whether in tactical folders, fixed blades, survival knives, or high-end chef’s knives, Elmax has earned its place among the so-called “super steels.” Brands like Microtech, LionSteel, Zero Tolerance, and Kershaw have all featured Elmax in their lineups, capitalizing on its well-rounded characteristics that appeal to both professionals and collectors. Its corrosion resistance, in particular, makes it suitable for outdoor and marine environments, while the superb edge retention benefits those who prefer to sharpen their blades less frequently.
Despite its strengths, Elmax does come with a few caveats. It’s generally more expensive than more commonly used steels, and because of its hardness, it can be more challenging to sharpen once dull, though not to the same extent as some of the newer ultra-high-hardness steels. Still, for users who prioritize long-term edge performance and corrosion resistance, and who don’t mind paying a bit more for a premium product, Elmax is a compelling choice.
Today, Elmax continues to be a benchmark in premium blade steels. Its reputation is well-earned, backed by both lab results and real-world performance. Whether on a rugged outdoor tool or a precision kitchen slicer, Elmax delivers consistent excellence that meets the demands of serious users.
